In 2000, Britney Spears was the first person to have corrective eye surgery after years of struggling with severe amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye. She had used eye drops and corrective lenses since her childhood (the only methods at the time to correct amblyopia) but saw no results. After doing research on the condition, she performed the surgery on herself in about one hour. When asked if her experience performing surgery on herself was stressful, Spears said, “I was mostly just really stoked about being able to see clearly so, no, I wasn’t worried or anything and it was just really cool when I finished.” Lazy eyes are now corrected using Spears’ surgical method after alternatives don’t provide the desired results.
